CSA ranks 71st in the world!

In what could be called a testimony to Bengaluru being the IT capital of India, the Indian Institute of Science’s Computer Science and Automation (CSA) department was ranked 71st in the recently released The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-2017, making it the top institute in India for Computer Science. The only other Indian Institute to make it to the top 100 in the Computer Science subject was the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay at 82nd spot. This year’s ranking table included institutions from 79 countries with 980 institutes, representing an elite 5 per cent of the world’s higher education institutions. THE’s World University Rankings judges world-class universities across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

“I am delighted that CSA's sustained track record of foundational scientific contributions has been recognized through its appearance at the 71st position in the latest THE international rankings”, says Prof. Jayant Haritsa, the Chairman of the department.

“In fact, if we consider only the Research parameter of the rankings, CSA jumps to the 36th position in the world! These numbers bear direct testimony to the quality of faculty and students that CSA continues to attract in an increasingly competitive academic marketplace, and highlight the department's conducive environment for conducting research on par with the best of international institutions”, he adds.

The rankings in the Computer Science subject considered factors like the learning environment at the institutions, the volume, income and reputation of the research carried out in the institutions, the research influence through citations, the international outlook of the staff, students and research, and the innovation potential of the institutions. There is a strict criterion for an institution to be even included in the rankings - it must publish a minimum of 200 research papers a year over the five years.

In the Computer Science subject, ETH Zurich (also called Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) was ranked first followed by California Institute of Technology and University of Oxford. The University of Oxford secured the top spot, knocking five-time champion the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) into second place. The National University of Singapore (NUS) came out as Asia’s top university at 24th spot – its highest ever rank.

CSA’s rankings are a result of the department’s efforts to be the best in the country. “Over the last decade, we have consciously valorized quality over quantity, and strongly encouraged the development of software tools showcasing our conceptual advances - these policies have now borne fruit, with the majority of our publications appearing in premier international forums, and our software being extensively used in industrial and academic labs worldwide. I am confident that CSA, propelled by its latest recruits, will rise to even greater heights in the years to come”, signs off Prof. Haritsa.
