Ajay Sood, Professor of Physics, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, UK for 2015 on May 1. In a career spanning four decades, he has initiated several contemporary research areas; provided deep insights into some of physics' long standing questions and developed potential applications using nanotechnology.
The Royal Society is the national Academy of science in the UK. Royal Society Fellows are elected for their excellence in science based on a peer review process, and comprise of the most eminent scientists, engineers and technologists from the UK and the Commonwealth. This year, 47 new Fellows and 10 new Foreign Members have been announced.
In its citation for the award, the Royal Society has said “the originality, diversity and significance of Professor Sood’s contributions are truly remarkable and noteworthy”, and recognises him “as one of the important young leaders of Indian science in general and physics in particular”.
“I feel happy, honoured and humbled. It is humbling because of the names of the people who are elected fellows is a distinguished list”, said Prof Sood.
“When they recognise me, they are recognising the work done in India, because I have my complete training in India. I not only feel good for me, I feel good for my students, collaborators, department, the Institute, and the country”, he added.
In 2003, Sood and his team at IISc generated electricity by allowing liquid and gas flow over carbon nanotubes. This unveiled a totally new type of physics – hitherto unknown. The discovery, often called the “Sood effect”, finds applications in a many fields, from medical appliances like pacemakers to gas pipelines.
Prof Sood is a winner of the prestigious The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize in Physics, and was a President of the Indian Academy of Sciences. He is now the Secretary General of TWAS.
So far, 42 Indians (conducting research in India) have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society, including the legends Srinivasa Ramanujam and Sir C V Raman. Prof. C N R Rao and Prof. Roddam Narasimha were awarded the Fellowship in 1982 and 1992 respectively.
