Urban Study Group: Reading the South Asian City

The Urban Study Group list was formed by Sarai in the early 2000s in response to a perceived lacuna in scholarly reflection about urban life and history in South Asia. Email lists like the Urban Study Group served a role now occupied largely by social media, allowing list members from South Asia and different parts of the world to debate a range of timely and untimely questions pertaining to the urban experience in South Asia. Today, almost 20 years later, critical reflection about cities in the subcontinent is robust and multivalent, occupying spaces of public discourse as well as academic inquiry. But significant questions remain about the past and future of cities in South Asia. Struggles over property and occupancy of urban space endure, while questions about environmental stewardship and transport resonate with growing urgency. Despite active citizenry and civic participation in certain areas, urban governance and planning continue to be significant challenges. We relaunch the Urban Study Group list in recognition of the continued need for independent spaces of exchange and inquiry about cities. We invite members to debate matters of concern about urbanism in South Asia and to share relevant announcements and publications.

The list is hosted and maintained by Research Matters, a project of Gubbi Labs. Text-based announcements are encouraged, in addition to images and other attachments. Email attachments over 250 kilobytes in size and emails that are sent to multiple lists will require approval by moderators. Emails that are not relevant to the list will not be approved. Questions about list content and subscriptions can be emailed to info[at]gubbilabs[dot]in.
