முடக்கு வாதம்  (Rheumatoid Arthritis) எனப்படும் நோயானது முதன்முதலில் 19ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் கண்டறியப்பட்டதாகும். இன்றளவில் உலகின் சுமார் 1-2% மக்களை இந்த நோய் தாக்குகின்றது.  ஓர் உடலின் நோய் எதிர்ப்பு மண்டலம், நோய் ஏற்படுத்தும் நுண்ணுயிரிகளை விடுத்து, அந்த உடலின் திசுக்களை, குறிப்பாக மூட்டுகளைத் தாக்கி, பாதிப்பு ஏற்படுத்துவதே இந்நோய்க்குக் காரணமாகும்.
