The U.S. News & World Report, an American media company and a leading authority in education rankings, has recently announced the 2019 Best Global Universities Rankings covering 1,250 educational institutions from 75 countries across the globe. The rankings were calculated using 13 indicators, including global and regional research reputation, publications, citations, and international collaborations.

Universities from the US and the United Kingdom occupied the top ranks in the list. The Harvard University topped the list followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and The University of California–Berkeley. The University of Oxford from the UK came fifth. With an overall rank of 38, the National University of Singapore has been rated the best in Asia. Two other universities from Asia, the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and the Tsinghua University, China, have made into the top 50.

With 227 institutes in the list, the US shines as the country with the most representatives. It is followed by China with 130 institutions, the UK with 78, Japan with 67 and Germany with 62 institutes. India has 29 institutions ranked in the list.

The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru retains its position as the best Institute in India with a global rank of 509, followed by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Panjab University, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, and the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. The Indian universities performed relatively better in some particular subjects like chemistry, physics, and engineering, as shown by the subject wise rankings. Twenty institutes from India performed well in chemistry, 14 in physics and 12 in engineering, and feature among the top 600 best performers globally.

The US News and World Report's Best Global Universities Rankings is an excellent platform for the students and academicians to have an insight into how universities compare globally. “Since an increasing number of students plan to enrol in universities outside of their own country, the Best Global Universities rankings – which focus specifically on schools' academic research and reputation overall and not on their separate undergraduate or graduate programs can help those applicants accurately compare institutions around the world” reads their report.
