QS World University Rankings 2019 announced, feature 24 Indian Universities among Top 1000 in the world

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2019 were announced on June 6th 2018, which ranked 1000 of the world’s best universities from 85 countries. 24 Indian universities made it into the list, among which Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay , Mumbai emerged as the leader  ranking 162 in the world, with an overall score of 48.2/ 100. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru was ranked second in the country at 170 with a score of 47.1, while Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) with 46.6 was ranked 172.

IIT Bombay has seen an immense improvement in its ranking, climbing around 57 places in the last two years. The institute was ranked at 179 last year, climbing 17 spots to 162 this year. IISc saw the highest climb of 20 rankings from last year, while four other IITs; Kanpur (283), Kharagpur (295), Roorkee (381) and Guwahati (472) also saw improvements in their rankings. Rankings of IIT Delhi (172) and IIT Madras (264) remained unchanged.

Singapore remained the leader in Asia with National University of Singapore ranked at 11 followed by Nanyang Technological University at 12 being the two highest rankings from Asia. Tsinghua University, China ranked at 17, also made it to the top 20.

Globally, US remained unchallenged with US institutions claiming the top four rungs with; Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranked first. Stanford University, Harvard University and Caltech ranked 2, 3 and 4 respectively. Oxford University from UK bagged the 5th place.

Notably, Quacquarelli Symonds is a leading global higher education company providing products, services and platforms for students and educational institutions. QS has been best known for the QS World University Rankings , of which this year marks the fifteenth edition. The ranking list of 2019 was the most extensive yet, featuring 1000 of the world’s best universities from 85 countries. The rankings used data from 70000 academics, 40000 employers and over 12 lakh academic papers.
